ART presents

Vermont Actors’ Repertory Theatre presents the festive comedy The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge by Mark Brown on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday, December 9 to 12, 7:30 p.m. at the West Rutland Town Hall Theater, Main Street, West Rutland

After four years of staging Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, the Company decided to present this wonderful new comic rendition of what may have happened a year later, in 1844. First produced in 2004 by the Orlando-UCF Shakespeare Festival, the play is a comedic trial, Ebenezer Scrooge, back to his old ways, is suing Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future for multiple offences. The ghosts employ England's most savvy barrister. Scrooge represents himself. But the Spirit of Future breaks under heavy questioning and admits that Jacob Marley forced the spirits to confess. Judge Pearson gives his verdict: Jacob Marley and the Spirits of Christmas are guilty! Pearson fines the Spirits and terminates their redemptive duties. Rothschild, the Ghost’s lawyer, pleads with the judge not to terminate the Spirits because it's a death sentence. But Scrooge makes an offer that startles all.  He admits the Spirits had to go to extraordinary measures for change, so he did the same. The Seattle Times called it, “A sequel worthy of Dickens’ approval.” Talkin' Broadway said: "If you’ve yet to join in the festivities of this holiday season, this may be the play to start with.  It has just enough “bah, humbug” in it to ease you slowly into the happiness of the holidays… a delightful new holiday tradition."

The playwright, Mark Brown, is an award-winning writer and actor.  His plays also include Around the World in 80 Days, China, The Whole Enchilada, Poe: Deep Into That Darkness Peering and The Little Prince.  As an actor he has appeared on stage, screen and TV working with such people as Tom Hanks, George Clooney and Dick Van Dyke.  Brown lives in New York City with his wife and daughter.

Noises Off presented by Marble Valley Players

The Marble Valley Players will present Michael Frayn's delightful farce "Noises Off" at the West Rutland Town Hall Theater over two weekends, Oct. 9, 10, 11, 16 & 17. The story of Noises Off, if you can call it a story, depicts the onstage and backstage antics of a fifth-rate acting troupe touring in an awful sex farce. Nothing On is the title of this play-within-a-play. Noises Off is a glorious opportunity to watch seven slamming doors, one breaking window, 10 trips up and down stairs and 17 false entrances, while listening to 73 flubbed lines, 46 miscues, one dramatic highlight, 22 double entendres, six regular entendres and a million laughs... all while trying to find a missing plate of sardines. The result is by far the craziest comedy ever to hit the stage -- a farce by which all others must now be measured. It's not an easy play to pull off. Timing is critical. Actors must memorize lines that ultimately don't make any sense, as well as frenetic blocking that expend more energy than a marathon. What's more it takes real discipline for the actors not to break up themselves.

Even more of a challenge is the set...someone has to build this two-story set and hang seven doors! As this play proves, theater can be as much fun behind the scenes as it is on stage. Tickets are $12.00 are available at the door, West Rutland Town Office and the Paramount Theater box office.

The Marble Valley Players will present Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman's farce

The play first appeared on Broadway in 1939, followed by a movie starring Bette Davis in 1942. There have been many revivals of this all American classic, most recently in 2000 starring Nathan Lane.

In this hilarious comedy, the outlandish NYC radio wit, Sheridan Whiteside, is invited to dine at the home of the prominent Stanley family in a small Midwestern town. A slip on a patch of ice outside their door lands him in a wheelchair. A tumultuous six weeks of confinement follow, during which Whiteside monopolizes the living room and takes over the Stanley household. Before it's over, penguins in the library, an octopus in the cellar, convicts at dinner and visiting movie stars all seem commonplace.

Director Charlotte Gillam and co-director Val Gravelle have assembled a veteran cast to play a most extravagant array of eccentric characters.
Performances will run two weekends, Friday and Saturday, March 13 & 14 and March 20 & 21 at 8:00PM. There will also be a Sunday matinee on March 15th at 2:00PM. Tickets are available at the door on performance nights or in advance at the West Rutland Town Hall offices and the Paramount theater box office or on line at www.paramountlive.org.

West Rutland opens a new recreation trail at Annual Town Picnic

The official opening of the West Rutland Town Farm Trail took place on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at 11:00 am. Residents were invited to cut the ribbon at the pedestrian bridge (near the soccer field) and take a guided tour of the one-mile loop. Immediately following enjoy hot dogs and ice cream provided by the Rotary Club. Tom Joyce the magician also performed his tricks to children of all ages.

The opening of the Town Farm trail will create a new and quality hiking / trail experience in the Rutland area and more specifically at the popular West Rutland Recreation Area, which is a few minutes walk from West Rutland’s largest residential neighborhood. This project is effectively an extension of a 1/3 mile long Pedestrian/Bike path built during 2005. The bike path leads from RT 133 (Clarendon Ave.), a major West Rutland artery, to the Recreation Area. The new trail begins at point adjacent to the soccer field beginning with a 60’ long and 6’ wide pedestrian bridge which crosses the Clarendon River. It was constructed in large part through a grant through Vermont Recreation Trail Grant Program in accordance with Vermont Forest, Park and Recreation trail standards by the Vermont Youth Conservation Corp. Trail usage will be all non-motorized, such as; hiking, running, mountain biking, XC skiing and snowshoeing. The trial is one mile long and has an elevation change of 300 vertical feet.

The trail will pass through very esthetically pleasing and diverse areas, such as; a river crossing, wet lands, small cliffs and upland forest. Per Jeffrey V. Freeman author of Vermont’s Largest Trees the state’s largest Beech tree is also on this site.

West Rutland Town Hall kicks off 100th Anniversary

The official grand reopening of the West Rutland Town Hall took place on March 27th , 2008 at 7:00 pm. Governor Douglas cut the ribbon as the Town unveiled for the first time the completed renovations to this historic building.

The building is a vital component of the town and officials and supporters were committed to restoring its historical integrity while improving its long-term functionality. Their goal was to complete the renovation by 2008, which coincides with the 100th anniversary of the West Rutland Town Hall.

That goal is being realized today after years of efforts. Beginning in 1986, at the Town’s Centennial celebration, a small gathering of community members interested in preservation of the historic building was formed. The Friends of the West Rutland Town Hall, Inc. worked in partnership with the Town towards the complete restoration by 2008.

With the 100th year anniversary, this timely restoration will highlight the town’s historical relevance and commitment and enhance its future potential. A number of events throughout 2008 will be planned ending with a fireworks display at the Town’s Annual Tree Lighting to be held on December 6th.

Over $1.2 million in renovations were raised from a variety of fundraising sources: The Town and School, Vermont Housing and Conservation, Historic Preservation of Vermont, Vermont Community Development, The West Rutland Alumni Association, and the Friends of the Town Hall. The Friends Annual Tasting Supper was also a major contributor for the project, drawing hundreds of attendees throughout the region. In addition, the Historical Society, the Vermont Arts Council, the Carving Studio and the Marble Valley Players as well as various residents and businesses contributed with cash donations and in-kind labor and materials.
